STOMAS GUIDE

How do you clean your voice prosthesis?

A starting point for looking after a Provox voice prosthesis and following the routine taught by your clinical team.

The short answer

Use the cleaning equipment and routine taught by your speech and language therapist or specialist team. Follow the instructions for your specific prosthesis.

📑 Contents

Keeping your voice prosthesis clean is part of everyday care after laryngectomy. Food or mucus can interfere with the valve and may affect speaking or cause leakage.

Follow the routine you have been taught

Use the brush and any other cleaning equipment supplied for your particular prosthesis. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the technique demonstrated by your clinical team.

Atos Medical recommends regular cleaning of Provox voice prostheses, including in the morning, evening and after meals. Your own team can explain the routine for your device.

When should you ask for help?

Contact your specialist team if cleaning does not resolve leakage or difficulty speaking. Ask for another demonstration if you are unsure how to use your equipment.
